  • Finsbury Park to Highbury Fields Cycleway (QW10)

    We are now consulting on the Finsbury Park to Highbury Fields part of a future Cycleway between Farringdon and Palmers Green which has been developed in partnership with Transport for London. This new Cycleway route has been chosen because it is already very popular with cyclists and the numbers of people using this route are likely to increase.

    Our scheme would create a greener, more pleasant space for local people and a convenient, safer and more direct cycle route for cyclists of all abilities. The proposals have been designed to improve safety and comfort for cyclists and pedestrians by reducing conflict with motorised traffic.
    The improvements include fully protected cycle tracks, greening measures, widened footways, safer junctions, pedestrian crossing points and new signs/ road markings. All of these are designed to make cycling and walking easier, safer and more enjoyable.

    This route would link to other Cycleways in the London cycling network, including a complimentary signed route to the recent improvements at Highbury Corner, and make it easier for local people of all ages to cycle and walk to local facilities such as leisure centres and shops.

    The wider cycle lanes will allow people with adapted cycles such as cargo bikes or cycles for disabled people to use the route more easily and make it safer for all vulnerable road users in line with the Vision Zero agenda, which aims to eliminate all deaths and serious injuries from our roads.
    What are Cycleways?

    Cycleways are continuous, clearly signed and convenient cycle routes which bring together all of the high-quality routes into a single London-wide network that is easy for everyone to understand and use.

    1. Blackstock Road/ Ambler Road Junction: Traffic lights would be introduced at the junction with new pedestrian crossings, providing early release for cyclists and cycle boxes on all arms. This design will significantly improve conditions for pedestrian and cyclists crossing Blackstock Road and allow cyclists to continue on the Cycleway route towards Finsbury Park. This proposal will involve the removal of a parking space on Somerfield Road and the Electric Vehicle charging point along Ambler Road would need to be relocated. The section towards Finsbury Park will be consulted on separately by Hackney Council. (see map section 1)

    2. Gillespie Road/ Avenell Road Junction: Priority at the junction would be reversed so that vehicles on Gillespie Road would give-way to vehicles on Avenell Road. This design would also raise the carriageway to footway level which would make it easier for crossing pedestrians and cyclists using the Cycleway to turn into Gillespie Road. (see map section 2)

    3. Gillespie Road Trial Arrangement: The ongoing trial point no-entry preventing traffic travelling westbound on Gillespie Road past the junction with St Thomas’s Road, is not being formally consulted on as part of the Cycleway proposals but we welcome feedback. (see map section 5)

    4. Drayton Park/ Aubert Park Junction: The existing mini-roundabout at the junction would be removed and changed to a priority (give-way) junction. The carriageway will be raised to footway level with pedestrian crossing points on all sides of the junction. This will raise awareness of the new Cycleway route and also make it easier for pedestrians to cross the road. The junction would prioritise movements on Drayton Park and traffic along Aubert Park would give-way. (see map section 3)

    5. Martineau Road – Aubert Park: Fully protected cycle facility at least 2.2m would be provided for northbound cycles between Martineau Road and Aubert Park. The proposal allows for southbound cyclists to mix comfortably with general traffic by adopting a position in the centre of the traffic lane, making them more visible to other traffic. The proposed design will maintain the existing number of parking spaces, however some parking bays would be relocated elsewhere between Martineau Road and Aubert Park to make room for improved cycle facilities. For the purposes of consultation, two design options for protecting cyclists are being considered, which we would like you to comment on. Examples are given below to illustrate the different design options. (see map section 3)

    • Kerb protected cycle tracks: the cycle track would be at the same level as the carriageway with a kerb installed to separate vehicles and cyclists. See below example from Cycle Superhighway 2 between Stratford and Aldgate.

    • Stepped cycle tracks: The cycleway would be installed halfway between the carriageway and footway. See below example from Midland Road in LB Camden.

    6. Benwell Road – Martineau Road: Fully protected cycle facilities would be introduced in both directions on this section of Drayton Park. The cycle tracks would be at least 2m wide in each direction and will also include a small strip that will physically protect cyclists from parked vehicles. The proposed design will maintain the existing number of parking spaces and access arrangements along Drayton Park. Existing zebra crossings will be raised to footway level improving pedestrian accessibility and safety. (see map section 3,4)

    7. Benwell Road/ Drayton Park Junction: The existing junction would be converted to a ‘continental-style’ roundabout which would include protected cycle facilities throughout the junction and new cycle crossings on all arms of the junction. The design will also significantly improve conditions for pedestrians by introducing new zebra crossings on all arms, raised surface and widened footways reducing crossing distances. (see map section 5)

    8. Highbury Crescent Signed Route: A complimentary signed route is proposed to connect up to the recent improvements at Highbury Corner. (see map section 6)

  • High Barnet Station Development

    A major housing development of 450 new homes is proposed around High Barnet Station, east of Barnet Hill. It includes a Cycle Hub, but no details on safe space of cycling to the station. It means removal of a large number of trees to build high-rise blocks.

    Our vision is to improve the connections between Chipping Barnet and Underhill, support local businesses in the town centre, deliver tangible benefits for the local community and provide new green spaces throughout the site.

  • Barnet - King George Playing Fields consultation

    Barnet Council have launched a consultation on their Masterplan for the Playing Fields 

    The proposal offers a significant improvement in the facilities on the playing fields with several new facilities. 

    Transport & Cycling provision worth noting: 

    - new 66 space carpark in the centre of the park near the new Sports Hub building 

    - no cycle storage indicated on the plan

    - No North-South cycle route marked [the fields link to the Dollis Valley Way, one of Barnets few signed off-road cycle paths

  • Nasty pothole #1 on Hadley Road

    Actually two nasty potholes on the westbound carriageway (towards Hadley Wood).  18in-24in across but deep with sharp sides.  Hit one of these last week and got instant puncture.

  • A5 crossing A406

    Two lanes of traffic merging from left onto local designated cycle route No 5. Cyclists crossing bridge going north on the A5 have to cross fast moving traffic merging from the left. A waiting area for cyclists could be provided at the base of the bridge to allow cyclists to cross the slip road at right angles. (Southbound is in Brent)

  • A41-A598 Burgess Hill

    Cyclists going straight up the Finchley Road from Swiss Cottage to Golders Green have to cross two lanes of fast A41 traffic, where the Hendon Way turns off to the left.One possible solution would be for cycles to remain on the left and have a facility to use the pedestrian crossing across the top of the Hendon Way. Recommended route via Ardwick Road/Burgess Hill is not efficient and involves crossing 2 lanes when rejoining Finchley Road.

  • A1000 – Underhill left turn lane

    The left-turn lane is a hazard for cyclists. Redesign left-turn lane for cyclists going straight on to Barnet Hill. Cyclists have difficulty crossing the left-turn lane and get squeezed. Could make left lane straight on or left. Could convert traffic lights to Toucan to allow cyclists to cross Underhill into Barnet Hill.

    The left-turn lane is a hazard for cyclists. Redesign left-turn lane for cyclists going straight on to Barnet High Street. Cyclists have difficulty crossing the left-turn lane. Could convert traffic lights to Toucan to allow cyclists to cross Wood Street into the High Street.

  • A1000 Whetstone dangerous junction

    The left-turn lanes are a hazard for cyclists going straight on the A1000 north and south. Cyclists have difficulty crossing the left-turn lane and get squeezed. Redesign left-turn lanes to allow cyclists to use them when going straight on. Buses already use them for this purpose.

  • Segregated cycle path on approach to North Circular

    The A105 southbound has segregated cycle lanes and then a bus lane until the bus lane ends just short of the North Circular. The bus lane ending creates a vicious pinch point for cyclists with a metal barrier on the left and cars pushing into the lane from the right to avoid the queue of vehicles turning right into the North Circular.

    As the pavement on the left is very wide, there is enough space to paint a short stretch of bicycle lane onto the pavement, starting where the bus lane ends (so as to not interfere with the bus stop) and ending at Regents Avenue where the road is wide enough and one can continue into the bicycle box at the North Circular junction.

  • Wykeham Primary School Proposed School Travel Plan

    As part of our sustainable transport policy, we are progressively improving key walking routes to schools and making them safer for all road users such as children. This documents outlines our proposal to improve pedestrian access to Wykeham Primary School in Annesley Close.

    Why are we proposing this change?
    In 2017 Brent Council introduced a number of road safety improvements in roads around the
    Wykeham Primary school. This was in response to concerns raised by the school, local ward
    councillors and residents submitting a petition to Brent Council. Although we have installed a
    number of improvements to stop the obstructive parking on footways and Carriageway, and to
    reduce congestion in Annesley Close. The situation had not improved and drivers continue to
    obstruct the Carriageway and the Footways during the school peak hours at am and pm.
    The proposals we have introduced include the installation of Pedestrian Guard rails, Street trees
    and the installation of the School Keep Clear marking.

    What are the proposed improvements?
    The scheme proposals are shown in the attached drawing. In summary the proposals include:
    The introduction of a Pedestrian and Cycle zone in Annesley Close from its junction with
    Aboyne Road and the turning circle, between 8:15 to 9:15am and 2:30 to 4:00pm. The
    Permit holders within the proposed zone (Annesley Close), Emergency Service Vehicles,
    blue badge holders and permitted delivery vehicles would be exempted from the
    proposed restrictions.
    Introduction of timed “Pedestrian and Cycle” zone signs to help the enforcement of this
    area to improve safety of children and all pedestrians.

  • Uneven tarmac at bus stop

    2019/01/20 - This has been resurfaced and is all nice and flat now.

    Going east at this point there is a bus stop where buses stopping have caused the tarmac to ripple badly.  Could cause you a nasty surprise if you don't spot it.

  • Stag Lane & Roe Green Local Safety Scheme

    "Over the last 3 years there have been 26 traffic accidents recorded in Stag Lane resulting in 31 casualties. These casualties included 10 vehicle passengers, 9 vehicle drivers, 6 motorcycle riders, 4 cyclists and 2 pedestrians. 

    A 20 mph speed limit on Stag Lane and Roe Green between Mollison Way and Kingsbury Road designed to be self-enforcing through the introduction of traffic calming measures

     Speed cushions on Stag Lane and Roe Green which are narrow enough to allow a wide wheel based vehicle such as fire engine or an ambulance to pass relatively unhindered. A smaller wheel base vehicle such as a car however would need to have at least one set of wheels on some part of the cushion. Speed cushions have proved very effective in helping to reduce vehicle speeds.

     New pedestrian refuge islands on Stag Lane, by Carlisle Road and Goldsmith Lane to provide additional safe crossing points for pedestrians.

     Footway widening (kerb build outs) at the junction of Carlisle Road and Tewkesbury Gardens to slow traffic and reduce crossing widths for pedestrians.

     2 variable message speed signs to advise drivers to slow their speed.

     The installation of short sections of double yellow line “At Any Time” waiting restrictions at the Harrod Court vehicle access to the clinic. "

  • Ealing Road Local Safety Scheme

    The council proposes the following:

     20mph Speed Limit– A new 20mph speed limit will be introduced on Ealing Road from Wembley High Road to Mount Pleasant. Eight electronic vehicle activated 20mph and speed indicator signs will be installed at regular intervals to advise drivers about the 20mph speed limit and their current speed;

     Traffic Calming Features – Six new raised speed tables will be provided to reduce vehicle speeds and improve crossing facilities for pedestrians;

     New Zebra Crossings – 2 new raised speed tables & zebra crossings and 1 raised existing zebra crossing will replace the existing traffic island and speed cushions. This will provide more opportunities for pedestrians to cross safely between the traffic flows.
